A big step towards self-service in transport was made by the Helsinki Transport Company HSL and the railway carrier VR - from 19th of June, the sale of tickets directly on trains at the conductors has ceased.
Passengers must now acquire a travel document before boarding a train. This can be done with the help of the machine, at the HSL or R-kioski points. Many locals prefer to use a mobile application (VR Lahijunat and VR Mobiili) to purchase a ticket.
At all stations VR in the period until 21th of June workers who will help passengers with the purchasing a ticket will be on duty. For casual trips, you can buy a one-time ticket in advance, which you will need to activate when boarding.
In the summer and autumn the network of automated points of travel documents sale will be expanded. As HSL assured, the controllers will still work on public transport in pairs, including night trips. Penalty for stowaway is 100 euros now.
