As part of a planned raid to catch drunk drivers, police in Helsinki asked people what made them sit behind the wheel being drunk.
The police department of Helsinki reported on two days of intensive checks on the roads of the capital: on June 17 and July 8, drivers were forced to "blow into the tube," and those who did not pass the test had to give explanations to their unwise deed.
In just two days, 732 and 813 drivers were checked for alcohol, respectively.
According to the senior police commissioner Jarkko Lehtinen, the results of the raids cause concern. In total, about 3% of drivers have drunk alcohol before driving. Part of the people still did not exceed the permissible limit of 0.5 ppm.
"In the metropolitan region, there are excellent public transport and many taxis. No one needs to drive his car to have fun somewhere," - says Jarkko Lehtinen.
From the explanations of drivers it becomes clear that they usually allow themselves to drink one or two alcoholic drinks, because they hope that they will not exceed the established limit.
"I only drank two Mexican beers. You never know how strong it is. I did not know that I could not get behind the wheel, "- justified the 35-year-old to the road policeman after the breathalyzer showed 0.7 ppm. The one, whose result exceeded 1.2 ppm, honestly admitted that he drank four cans of beer less than 12 hours ago. "Too little time has passed," concluded the 37-year-old intruder.
"I drank one and a half can of beer recently. I could not imagine that this would affect my ability to drive. I have read that you can drink one, - justified a miniature 25-year-old girl, promising to do better. - I'm startled. This will be a lesson for me!"
Someone honestly admitted that he was trying to cope with stress with the help of alcohol. "I quarreled with my girlfriend", "Because it's hard," policemen heard from the drivers.
